What is wrong with this picture? Indiana teachers are not parents, they are teachers. They are not career counselors, nor should they be. It is difficult, at best, to be a teacher in this day and age without having requirements foist upon them that have no basis for increasing their teaching abilities. They are already forced to attend too many “enrichment” sessions that end up going nowhere. They are the pawn of the politicians who see anything pertaining to “education” as a step up for them politically. “Everyone wants the best for their children.” Well, let me tell you, it would be better for everyone involved if teachers were left to TEACH, not to be family counselors, not to be psychiatrists, not to be life coaches, or pseudo-family for those whose families could care less about their children. What is needed is a return to discipline, complementary coalition between parents and teachers that cement the educational process so that our children can actually benefit from going to school. My daughter and daughter-in-law both are teachers and their pay scale is way below what their career expects of them. They do not just teach, they spend HOURS preparing, researching, designing materials that follow the “core”. They do this on their own time…in the evenings, on weekends, etc. Their families suffer so that other families’ children can achieve their best. That’s their goal…to bring out the best in their students, to bring them to work “to the best of their ability”, to provide the tools for them to grow in to responsible, literate, individuals who can use their interests, imagination, abilities for their success in life. Keep the politicians out of the classroom.
